His ability to bring humor, patience and positivity into a high-acuity environment speaks to the kind of nurse and teammate he is.
Midland, Texas – Cristian Atayde, Clinical RN III in the Critical Care Unit at Midland Health, was recently honored with The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of The DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate care nurses provide to patients, families, and colleagues every day.

Atayde was named Midland Health’s April DAISY Award winner for the extraordinary care and encouragement he brings to patients, families, and fellow staff members.

Atayde was recognized during an evening surprise presentation by Dr. Kit Bredimus, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President, and Courtney Bryant, CCU Manager. Although the recognition was shared later due to Nurses Week activities, Midland Health wanted to ensure Atayde received the celebration he deserved.

His nomination highlighted the balance of strong clinical skills and personal warmth that make him a meaningful presence in the Critical Care Unit.

“His clinical skills are strong, but what truly makes him special is the energy he brings to the unit,” the nomination read. “In the demanding shifts, he tells jokes that make everyone laugh and shares stories that lighten the mood. He even takes the time to teach me Spanish, patiently repeating words while I laugh at myself for being a bad student.”

In the Critical Care Unit, nurses care for patients during some of their most serious and vulnerable moments. Atayde’s nomination reflects the impact of a nurse who not only provides skilled care, but also helps create moments of connection, relief and encouragement during difficult days.

His ability to bring humor, patience and positivity into a high-acuity environment speaks to the kind of nurse and teammate he is. Whether he is caring for a patient, supporting a colleague, or helping someone feel more at ease, Atayde demonstrates the compassion and presence at the heart of the DAISY Award.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, an autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this meaningful way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors nurses for extraordinary, compassionate care. At Midland Health, the award celebrates nurses whose skill, kindness, and dedication leave a lasting impact on patients, families, and colleagues.

Congratulations to Cristian Atayde on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for the difference you make for patients, families, and fellow staff members in the Critical Care Unit.
