For these three remarkable health care workers in particular, and your entire staff working with COVID patients, I commend them for their dedication to patient care and their skills to save lives.
I was a patient at Grandview Medical Center for a month, being treated for COVID-19. During this time I was in the ICU for all but 3 days, and I cheated death at least twice during my stay. Although several months have passed since I was discharged, I don’t want the time to get away without telling you what a wonderful staff of employees that you have working at your hospital. This includes the cafeteria employees, the cleaning crew, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and especially your nursing staff- all of whom I referred to as the “COVID Angels.” They all stand out as excellent employees so it is difficult to single out the great ones, but I would like to express in form of a letter of commendation for the following employees.
When I was first admitted to the COVID floor, Jamie was on duty. Her quick action and knowledge to get me to the ICU that night was instrumental in saving my life. As I was being rolled away to the ICU, I could hear her saying, “Don’t worry, I am going to get you back!” Just those words gave me hope. She kept a check on my condition the whole time that I was in the ICU even though I was not her patient. When I left the ICU, I was with nurse Jamie for three days before I was discharged. The care that she commands for her patients is remarkable. Jamie is energetic and encouraging and gives that over and beyond “I care for you” feeling to her patients. And most importantly, she prayed for me.
Megan should be commended for her excellence in nursing and her notable passion for patient care. Meagan went over and beyond to make me comfortable during my stay in the MICU. She also used a little sternness (which was greatly needed) to make sure that I laid on my abdomen and that I did not undo any of my many tubes. She provided dignity to my stay where dignity goes out of the window in the ICU with the front walls being all glass. She gave me the courage to stay strong and forge ahead. Even when she was not assigned to me, she came by to say hello. In addition, she kept my husband abreast of my condition and for that, I am particularly thankful since I was not able to carry on a phone conversation without coughing non-stop. She really lifted my spirits when she would help me clean up and change gowns calling it a “spa day.”
Bethany is the physical therapist assigned to me towards my final days in the ICU and continued the therapy when I was transferred to the COVID floor. I had no energy to go from the bed to the chair but somehow Bethany got me going. She is very patient and dedicated. After her therapy sessions, I felt so much stronger. She was instrumental in my being able to be treated at home after discharge, rather than going to a rehab center. One day when the floor was short-staffed, Bethany went over and beyond the call of duty and helped me clean up and change gowns. In addition, I overheard her volunteering to come to help the floor on her off day. How special is that!
