Corie helped carry the load of parenthood until we were able to rest and reset, filling our role as parents and caregivers.
Our 3-year-old daughter was admitted to Texas Children's on the midnight of Christmas Eve. We experienced fear and stress unlike anything before when this happened. Fortunately, we were fast-tracked to the PICU, where we met Nurse Corie. It did not take long for us to recognize that she was a truly special nurse. She was extremely attentive and was always happy to take time to provide information and answer any questions about our daughter's treatment. She made us comfortable in a high-stress situation. But most importantly, Corie gave our daughter such excellent care. Our daughter needed a chest tube, multiple IVs, and a BiPAP. Corie handled all of those treatments with skill and confidence. But since we spent Christmas at the hospital, Corie also made sure our daughter still had the opportunity to celebrate by sharing toys and games with her.

Even though she had been transferred to other patients, Corie still made time to say goodbye and come see our daughter off when she moved to Acute Care. Corie is an outstanding nurse, and she embodies the excellence Texas Children's is known for. Corie is an amazing example of what a nurse should be. Corie was really informative to our family and attentive to our child during the most critical time of need. Corie was always ready and willing to share the "why" of what was happening to my child and always explained why certain procedures were carried out. When we met Corie in PICU, My Husband and I were mentally and physically exhausted (at that point, we were awake for about 40 hours handling our daughter's illness). Corie helped carry the load of parenthood until we were able to rest and reset, filling our role as parents and caregivers. I felt I was actually able to rest because I was reassured that Corie was filling my role as mom for just a moment.

Corie went above and beyond not only by addressing my child's basic needs but also by making it fun and memorable, decorating my daughter's hospital bed and making her a paper crown. Corie was genuinely sweet and caring to us throughout our PICU experience. When Corie would come back in to help our nurse turn off alarms, my daughter remembered her and was excited to see her. The interaction came full circle when we were transferring off the unit; Corie saw our daughter and took the time to say goodbye. She even made a half-heart hand gesture, which my daughter returned; the action alone is just a summary of the kind of person Corie is.
