She saw the hurt in my eyes and began to give me words of encouragement that comforted me and reassured me of my ability to overcome any obstacles with my health.
At week 3 of being hospitalized, I began to display signs of anxiety and depression. During the day, I was lively and joked around with the nurses and patient care techs on duty as I encountered them, but I had to endure the reality of my situation at night. I was a single mom, away from my children due to medical reasons. I just felt hopeless. Then, one night after the shift changed, as my vitals were checked, I encountered “Ms. Cora”—a seasoned professional who meticulously did everything by the book. We shared light talk, and I even attempted to make her laugh with my comedic banter. As she took my blood pressure, she “looked” at me and saw right through my facade. She saw the hurt in my eyes and began to give me words of encouragement that comforted me and reassured me of my ability to overcome any obstacles with my health. She told me her challenges and how I needed to remain focused and get back to my sons. Now, I know this nomination may seem like she did not do anything extraordinary within the scope of her job, technically, but bedside manner and compassion heal the soul just as well as medicine can. Night after night, Ms. Cora’s gentle reassurance helped me push forward and meet my therapy goals during the day. I am happy to say that after being hospitalized and rehabilitated through physical therapy, I am now going home. I have spent 40 days and nights at this hospital. I have had outstanding medical professionals involved in my care, but Ms. Cora’s care, compassion, and gentle encouragement have proven to heal my soul. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You deserve a field of flowers for impacting my life, but I hope this one DAISY will do!
