Coral consistently worked with this patient, supporting him in achieving his goals.
I am writing to nominate Coral Strohl, a staff nurse on MSICU-6F, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her initiative and exceptional compassion toward a patient recently in her care. To provide some context, the MSICU at Tampa General is currently designated for patients undergoing decompensating liver transplant evaluations and those with highly complex metabolic dysfunctions.

This narrative details the case of a patient who was admitted for liver transplant evaluation, following referral from an outside institution. Upon admission, it was determined that this evaluation represented his final option for survival after prior denials for transplantation at other regional centers. His hospital course involved comprehensive diagnostic procedures, daily specialist consultations, adherence to dietary guidelines, and ongoing renal replacement therapy at the bedside. After nearly a month of meeting compliance and clinical benchmarks, he was listed for transplant candidacy; however, his status was subsequently revoked due to clinical deterioration. He was transferred back to the referring hospital and transitioned to hospice care.

Extended hospital stays and repetitive routines can lead patients to experience feelings of loneliness, isolation, and hopelessness. Our nursing staff is highly skilled and plays a vital role in mitigating these challenges. Coral consistently worked with this patient, supporting him in achieving his goals. She took the initiative to learn about his interests and, during her time off, created a hand-painted canvas as a personalized gift that reflected those interests. Upon returning to work, Coral discovered the patient had been discharged. The management team assured her that every effort would be made to deliver the painting, which was ultimately sent to the patient's family via expedited mail with their permission. The family later shared a photograph of him with the painting prior to his passing. Subsequent communication confirmed that he spent Thanksgiving at home and passed away peacefully the following day.
