I am writing this today to nominate Cody Effler for a DAISY Award for his outstanding care and compassion, which embodies the mission, vision, and values of St. Tammany Health System. As a parent of an autistic child, I am always terrified when we have to leave our safe space and seek care that I know will be stressful and overwhelming for my son. My son had been suffering from high fevers, not eating or drinking, and bilateral pneumonia for several days before we went to the emergency room. I had the extraordinary honor of witnessing firsthand how Cody cared for him while he was in the ER and throughout our admission to the pediatric floor. Cody knelt down next to him and talked softly and slowly so that he could follow and understand what was about to happen.
My son needed an IV started for a blood draw, IV antibiotics, IV steroids, and IV fluids to treat his bilateral pneumonia. He showed my son every piece of equipment used to start the IV and explained what would happen at each step. To me, also a nurse, but as a mom that night, this was incredibly comforting. To my son, this was calming his anxiety and placing him at ease. They were partners in that clinical task. He got my son to buy into what was about to happen, and he remained calm. This eased my momma's heart tremendously. Cody consistently demonstrated his exceptional clinical skills, a compassionate demeanor, and an unwavering commitment to providing quality patient care. Through these qualities, he was able to create a connection with my son that was incredibly heartwarming for me. I wholeheartedly believe that Cody embodies the qualities and values of exceptional care, compassion, and dedication to his patients and families that make him deserving of the DAISY Award. Thank you, Cody, for caring for my son the way you did. You are an exceptional nurse.
