That smile was the first in days, and it wouldn’t have happened without Claire’s compassion, intuition, and advocacy.
After a GI procedure earlier that day, my wife, K, had to return to Aurora Summit Medical Center’s ED due to severe complications. Our first attempt to go home ended abruptly when her pain intensified. By the time we returned a second time, K was in agony—unable to eat, drink, or sleep—and losing hope that anyone would truly listen or help.
We were about to leave—frustrated, exhausted, and defeated. K was still in unbearable pain. It was just after our nurse’s shift had ended when Claire unexpectedly entered our room. We had never met her before, but in that moment, her presence was everything. K was in tears, overwhelmed, and losing hope. Claire sat down beside her, held her hand, and listened—really listened. That simple act shifted everything.
Claire didn’t rush. She validated K’s pain, asked thoughtful questions, and made her feel heard. She then took action, advocating for us by speaking directly with our physician and helping to establish a clear plan. Before Claire, we felt lost. After Claire, we felt supported.
Within 24 hours, K underwent another procedure at St. Luke’s. The difference was night and day—she could eat, sleep, drink, and most importantly, she smiled again. That smile was the first in days, and it wouldn’t have happened without Claire’s compassion, intuition, and advocacy.
Claire exemplifies what nursing should be. Her empathy, clinical insight, and willingness to go above and beyond—even after her shift had ended—are why we continue to trust Aurora Summit with our care. Claire didn’t just treat a patient; she restored hope. She is a top-tier nurse.
