Claire demonstrated humility, empathy, knowledge, and advocacy.
Claire has gone above and beyond in meeting all the characteristics required to be a recipient of this prestigious award. In the following account, you will read how she demonstrates commitment to compassionate care, makes connections with patients and families, and advocates strongly for them.

Claire persevered through a difficult patient load. Both her patients were on precautions, and one required a heavy workload due to stool incontinence multiple times throughout the shift, even while being walked to the bathroom. Despite the physical and mental challenges, she continually offered patience to her patient. She spent the majority of the day helping this patient, yet she still found time to care for and document on both her patients. The med pass also presented challenges, with changes in medication, a patient who had to take one pill at a time, and a pill that inadvertently popped out of the package and landed in the bedside trash container. Claire expertly administered Lovenox to her emaciated patient who appeared to have no body fat, building on her experience from the previous day. Claire observed the hospitalist discussing the patient’s condition with the family. When the hospitalist became defensive and frustrated with the family’s questions and concerns, Claire intervened. She explained to the hospitalist that the family was only expressing their concerns about the patient’s weight loss. The hospitalist then changed his tone and responded appropriately to the family. Claire provided clear answers to their questions about kidney function and how it is measured.

In this situation, Claire demonstrated humility, empathy, knowledge, and advocacy. I could not be more proud of her character and courage in helping them. Claire has demonstrated she is an exemplary student with a big heart to advocate for her patients. Claire Brosius is truly deserving of the DAISY Award for her outstanding dedication and compassionate care. Her ability to connect with and advocate for her patients and their families is commendable and inspiring.
