We sat in that room in absolute awe of the way he listened, explained things, and did his really tough job with so much grace.
There are simply not adequate words I can possibly string together to express me and my family’s appreciation for Christopher (Chris) Grimm with Oncology/SCT ICU.
After treatment for a very rare cancer, my dad experienced an incredibly scary and unfortunate medical event which landed him in the SCT ICU and ultimately took him from this Earth shortly after (two days later) in a way we never expected.
Chris came on shift at 7 am after we were admitted. As we navigated the heavy reality of what had/was happening, Chris truly felt like an angel on Earth. He was a source of calm, kindness, incredible care, and a clear passion for what he was doing. We had to have difficult conversations and make decisions we never wanted to be forced to make, yet Chris was our steady anchor through everything. We sat in that room in absolute awe of the way he listened, explained things, and did his really tough job with so much grace.
On the morning we took my dad off the ventilator, Chris was back on shift and was so gracious to make sure the worst moment of our life would be as peaceful as possible. His attention to details – getting me, my mom and my sister each a chair to sit at the bedside with my dad, giving us space and time, explaining what was going to happen, turning off monitors so we couldn’t hear when his heart stopped – none of the little details he did will ever be lost on us. I am sure some of those things are probably standard protocol, but what I hope you’ll hear in this nomination is how Chris approached every interaction with my family – going above and beyond with EVERYTHING he did. My mom is a retired nurse, and she was in awe of the way he did his job (which says a lot!).
There are a lot of things I hope to forget about those couple of days, but I can promise me and my family will never, ever forget the way Chris’s presence during such a difficult time made it ever so slightly easier to navigate and get through. We will forever be grateful for his care and concern.
