By advocating for her patient, Christine not only made sure he knew basic survival skills for a newly diagnosed condition, she also prevented a delay in treatment which could have resulted in him losing his bed and potential relapse.
Christine is a true advocate for her patients. Recently, she cared for an individual who was scheduled for discharge after waiting over five days for a bed at an inpatient treatment facility. Christine recognized that the patient had been started on insulin only two days prior, had very little knowledge of the disease and no home testing supplies. She took action by engaging the entire treatment team.

Christine coordinated with the patient's medical consult, attending physician and pharmacy technician to ensure the patient had appropriate testing supplies, insulin and syringes at the time of discharge. Christine then coordinated with social work to ensure the patient had a follow up for further management. She took the lead in providing diabetic education. She took the time to sit with the patient to discuss signs of hypo and hyperglycemia, healthy food choices and complications of unmanaged diabetes.

Christine also instructed the patient on how to use the glucometer, lancets and test strips as well as how to draw up and administer insulin. By advocating for her patient, Christine not only made sure he knew basic survival skills for a newly diagnosed condition, she also prevented a delay in treatment which could have resulted in him losing his bed and potential relapse.
