The impact Christine had was getting an infusion to a patient with a complex heart condition who also developed a rare complication from a common community virus.
Christine went above and beyond for a pediatric cardiac patient. There were significant barriers to family access to care, and the required treatment was an infusion that generally requires significant planning and pretreatment. This family historically had been challenging to communicate with, partly related to their living remotely, 2 hours away from needed care. In a short window of time, Christine coordinated the needed infusion that required her to obtain the unique drug from an Intermountain care partner. This allowed the family to avoid multiple back-and-forth trips in the winter and also prevented possible patient decompensation from continued delay in access to care.

Christine did this all in the course of a workday in which her "normal" demands persisted; she communicated with me as well as advanced heart failure specialists out of state and in a different institution, ensuring timely administration of treatment. She also effectively communicated with the family, such that additional treatments were scheduled at times that work for them in their own busy/complex schedule. Christine did this all with a smile on her face, never complaining or expressing frustration with either me or with the family. Christine exemplifies what it means to be patient-centered.

The impact Christine had was getting an infusion to a patient with a complex heart condition who also developed a rare complication from a common community virus. This prevented him from potentially needing emergent blood transfusions. She also helped with the coordination of future infusions, saving the outpatient team, family, and providers caring for him out of state from possible communication errors and delays in care.
