I want to recognize Chris Hansen from the 7th floor pre/post op ward for her exceptional care, unwavering integrity, and deep compassion during a time when I felt incredibly vulnerable.
When I arrived at Madison VA, I was facing an intense fear with my upcoming surgery. My anxiety was through the roof, making me feel completely overwhelmed. I was even second-guessing my decision to have the surgery altogether.
Chris didn’t just see a pre-op patient with a checklist to complete; she took charge of my care instantly, recognizing my fear and meeting it with profound respect, kindness, and patience. She truly understood my need for the process to move quickly, smoothly, and without pain; balancing my urgency with absolute clinical professionalism.
What stood out most was how present Chris felt, with immense human warmth. She never took shortcuts with my care, and her gentle demeanor helped me relax and feel less afraid when I didn’t think it was possible. I was understood!
Furthermore, Chris was my fiercest advocate. She ensured my fears were communicated and respected by everyone involved in my care. She shielded me from unnecessary stress and made sure the entire team was united to provide me with the best possible experience.
My post-op experience did not disappoint either. Chris continued to provide the same high level of care. She kept me comfortable and kept my husband informed. She even helped facilitate an earlier-than-expected discharge from the hospital.
Chris went above and beyond with her time, empathy, and respect. She is the absolute definition of what an extraordinary nurse should be. She embodies the true spirit of the DAISY Award!
