The community had a grant to help with the heater, and the Veteran is now safe and warm in his own home due to the actions of Christine.
Christine saw that a Veteran had been in the lobby for over 30 minutes, and she approached him and asked if she could help him. He told her he was having trouble with his heater not working. He stated, "My dog saved my life the other day because he woke me up. My heater is just blowing carbon monoxide, but I must use it because I do not have anything else, and it is too cold. I have bought a carbon monoxide monitor and leave the window open, so it all goes outside." Christine knew it was late on a Friday and was worried we could not get this Veteran some help quickly enough, so she asked the Veteran if she could seek help for him in his community, and the Veteran said yes. Christine reached out to a person she knew was a Veteran in his community and asked if there were any resources there for heaters. She shared what was happening with the Veteran's heater and the community person said they could help him that day. Christine was called by the community member and told that it was much worse than they thought and that the heater was blowing straight carbon monoxide and not working at all. The community had resources to get the Veteran safe and provided him with a working heater and replaced the broken heater in the home at no cost to the Veteran. The community had a grant to help with the heater, and the Veteran is now safe and warm in his own home due to the actions of Christine. This is exemplary action that kept the Veteran from being poisoned by carbon monoxide. Christine goes above and beyond for the Veterans all the time, and this is just a small example of her commitment to the Veterans here at West Texas VA. We are privileged to have her on our team. Christine always goes above and beyond for the Veterans, and she is an example of a DAISY Nurse. She consistently provides quality care to the Veterans and supports the team she works with to promote the mission of the VA and nursing in general.
