She goes above and beyond, caring and spending extra time to make everybody feel at ease, comfortable, and loved.
Just after Christmas this year, my mom became very ill and went into liver and kidney failure. After a couple of rounds of inpatient dialysis, she decided to stop dialysis treatment and go on hospice care at home. Christie became her primary hospice nurse at home. My mom and all of us were very scared and unsure of what to expect and how long we would actually have. After Christie’s first day, we were slightly put at ease. Every time Christie showed up, my mom would smile and enjoy spending time with her, even though she knew what it meant. Christie became part of our family in the short time that we had her with us. Every day she showed up, she would ask about my niece, who was a nursing student, how she was doing and how much further she had to go. Christie was always willing to answer all of our questions, help us out, and teach us exactly what to do and how to care for my Mom. When my mom became worse and passed away, Christie was there for all of us. As I said, she was part of the family, even though she was only with us for several weeks. We were very lucky to have her, and I believe any family that is lucky enough to have Christie as their hospice nurse will love her. She is very loving and caring, and she knows exactly what she’s doing. She goes above and beyond, caring and spending extra time to make everybody feel at ease, comfortable, and loved. I work in a pre-hospital field and it’s not all that often that you come across another healthcare provider that stands out and goes above and beyond for everyone else.
***
Christie provided exceptional hospice care to our loved one, going above and beyond in every aspect. She ensured care was initiated quickly, took the time to guide and educate our family hands-on, and consistently treated our loved one with dignity and compassion. She never treated her as “just” a hospice patient, but as a whole person, which meant more to our family than words can express. In addition to her compassionate care, Christie made a lasting impact on a nursing student within our family. Through her guidance and example during such an emotional time, she strengthened confidence and deepened understanding of the nursing process in a meaningful, real-world way. Her presence contributed greatly to both personal and professional growth. Christie exemplifies the true meaning of nursing through her empathy, dedication, and commitment to patient-centred care.
