Christa’s compassion and dedication truly shine in her care for chemo patients.
I would like to recognize Christa Oechler for her exceptional dedication, compassion, and leadership in supporting our team with chemotherapy in our unit. Her tireless efforts have been instrumental in fostering staff growth and enhancing patient care. One of Christa’s professional goals, shared with our unit’s leadership, was to increase the number of staff certified to administer chemotherapy, ensuring we could provide comprehensive care to chemo patients across all shifts on an inpatient unit.

With Christa’s guidance and encouragement, we achieved this goal. She supported the team throughout the certification process, offering resources, guidance, and encouragement every step of the way. During the training process, Christa’s presence on the unit was invaluable. Her extensive knowledge and calm demeanor helped staff feel safer and more confident when administering chemo for the first time. Even after the staff completed their training and became certified, Christa continued to provide support. Understanding that administering chemo is a new and high-stakes responsibility for many staff members.

In addition, Christa demonstrated unwavering commitment by coming in during off-shifts, staying until 1 or 2 am to help complete chemo treatments. Despite these late shifts, she would still return the next day to fulfill her nurse educator responsibilities with enthusiasm and dedication. Christa’s compassion and dedication truly shine in her care for chemo patients.

One example that stands out is her connection with a patient who was admitted multiple times for rounds of treatment. Christa not only remembered personal details about the patient’s life but also made a point to welcome her back each time she returned to the unit. This warm and personal approach clearly made a difference to the patient, who appreciated Christa’s genuine care and attention.

Upon the completion of this patient’s treatment, Christa went above and beyond to make the experience special. She coordinated a thoughtful send-off, having staff sign a card for the patient and secretly pulling the patient’s husband aside to learn her favorite snacks. Along with the card, we were able to fill a box of those snacks as a gesture of congratulations.

Christa’s dedication to supporting staff development, ensuring high-quality patient care, and fostering a compassionate environment is truly inspiring. Christa exemplifies the qualities of an extraordinary nurse and deserves to be recognized for her outstanding contributions.
