Inside the envelope were poems she chose to share with me, specifically to comfort and motivate me. I still have them, and her words meant more than I’m sure she realizes.
I was admitted to the 9th floor because I was experiencing severe, unexplained pain. I went through every test imaginable and left without answers. It was very discouraging, and all the nurses were so kind to me, but one of my nurses made a huge difference.

Chloe was only my nurse for two days, but I quickly opened up to her not only about my symptoms, but about my life and how I felt like I was carrying everything. She listened with such sincerity. She didn’t rush me or dismiss me as some others did. She met me where I was and even shared personal stories back with me. She showed me that being human with your patients is just as important as any skill.

On the second day, she let me know she wouldn’t be working for the next few days and probably wouldn’t see me again before I was discharged. After her shift was over, she came back to my room to thank me for opening up to her and letting her take care of me. She also handed me an envelope and told me she writes a lot of poetry. Inside the envelope were poems she chose to share with me, specifically to comfort and motivate me. I still have them, and her words meant more than I’m sure she realizes.

My hospital stay wasn’t ideal, but Chloe was one of the most memorable parts. She made me feel seen during a time when I felt anxious and overwhelmed, and I will never forget her kindness.
