Because of her persistence and critical thinking, the infant was assessed more thoroughly and ultimately required several pain medications and closer monitoring, which led to the decision to transfer to the NICU.
I would like to nominate Chloe for the DAISY Award for her exceptional compassion, teamwork, and clinical judgment. During a recent shift, she cared for a mother-baby couplet following a delivery complicated by a 90-second shoulder dystocia. Throughout the morning, the newborn was persistently inconsolable- crying continuously to the point it was audible from the nurses' station and widely recognized among staff. Although the patient was initially assigned to another nurse, Chloe stepped in to help by caring for the infant so the exhausted mother could rest.
While caring for the newborn at the nurses' station, Chloe and the original nurse became increasingly concerned as the infant's symptoms had continued to escalate throughout the shift. Chloe ended up taking over the care of this couplet; she trusted her instincts and worked alongside her coworker to escalate concerns and advocate for the physician to come to the floor and evaluate the baby. Because of her persistence and critical thinking, the infant was assessed more thoroughly and ultimately required several pain medications and closer monitoring, which led to the decision to transfer to the NICU. It was later determined that the infant was experiencing severe withdrawal and required a higher level of care.
Over two weeks later, the baby remains in the NICU continuing treatment. Chloe's willingness to step in, think critically, and advocate for her patient- while also supporting her team- made a life-changing difference. She even stayed beyond her shift to ensure the baby was safely transferred to the NICU. Chloe truly embodies the compassion and excellence the DAISY Award represents.
