Chidi cared for my 66-year-old mother-in-law during the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shifts. She had experienced an acute stroke and had a complex medical history. My husband and I live over 1,200 miles away, so when she had her stroke, we were unable to be there quickly. She was initially admitted to another hospital and then transferred to St. Francis for a higher level of care, where Chidi was her night-shift nurse shortly after her arrival.

Chidi was the first person on her medical team we could communicate with, and from the very beginning, he was nothing short of exceptional. He went above and beyond for my mother-in-law. He took the time to sit with her, calm her, and explain and re-explain her condition and what to expect next. He did this with incredible patience and compassion, making sure she understood what was happening rather than simply moving through the tasks of his shift.

He also took the time to give my husband and me detailed updates over the phone. Being so far away and unable to be there for someone we love during such a frightening and uncertain time was incredibly difficult. Knowing that Chidi was there caring for her gave us a sense of safety and reassurance that is difficult to put into words.

At one point, my mother-in-law struggled while eating dinner, and Chidi immediately recognized that something was wrong. He acted quickly to assist her in clearing the obstruction and then promptly escalated the situation to the physician and respiratory therapist out of an abundance of caution. His attentiveness and quick response made us feel that she was truly being watched over and cared for.

We feel incredibly lucky that Chidi was the nurse caring for my mother-in-law during such a vulnerable time. His patience, compassion, communication, and clinical attentiveness went far beyond what we could have hoped for. Even though we were more than 1,200 miles away, Chidi made us feel like we were not alone. He cared for my mother-in-law with the same compassion and concern we would have wanted for her ourselves.

For all of these reasons, we are incredibly grateful to Chidi and believe he is very deserving of a DAISY Award.

Thank you, Chidiebere, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
