Cheryl has been a pioneer in the field of nursing at PMC.
Cheryl Hickman became a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1975 and has worked at PMC for nearly 50 years. She has served in several staff and leadership roles throughout her career. Cheryl has been a pioneer in the field of nursing at PMC.

1974 - Graduated from the University of Kentucky's first nursing program at Prestonsburg Community College and began her career at Pikeville Methodist Hospital as a Charge Nurse on the Med/Surg Unit on the 4th Floor in the Elliott Building.
1975 - In October 1975, the Physicians wanted a Coronary Care Unit, and PMC opened a four-bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with central monitoring, where Cheryl was a Head Nurse on the 11-7 shift.
1978 - Cheryl became House Supervisor on the 11-7 Shift until April 1980, and then moved to Day Shift as House Supervisor and remained in this position until 1990.
1990 - Administration made changes to the organizational chart, and Cheryl became the Manager of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Under Cheryl's leadership and guidance, the first Neonatal interfacility Transport Ambulance was established in Eastern Kentucky. This would prove to be a very important service for premature babies in Eastern Kentucky.
1999 - Became Chief Nursing Officer and served in this position until 2008.
2004 - 1st nurse in the state of Kentucky to win the American Organization of Nurse Leaders' Community Partnership Award. The Community Partnership Award is the highest and most prestigious award given to an AONE member. The recipient is a leader in his/her hospital or healthcare system who has also been a leader in the community, enhancing the image of nursing, fostering involvement in public affairs, and forming strategic relationships and partnerships within the community. 2004- Awarded the Outstanding Alumnus award for Big Sandy Community and Technical College.
2005- Led Pikeville Medical Center's medical team to New Orleans for relief immediately after Hurricane Katrina with a group of Doctors, Nurses, and Paramedics. Cheryl was recognized on the floor of the US Senate for leading a medical team to the New Orleans airport after Hurricane Katrina.
2006- All members of the team that went to render aid during Hurricane Katrina were honored as Kentucky Colonels by Governor Ernie Fletcher.

This award is for someone who has demonstrated strength of character, leadership, and dedication to the welfare of others. Cheryl was and continues to be my mentor throughout my nursing career.
