She gave that mother and baby their best chance at a positive outcome with her quick thinking and ability to identify a true emergency.
Clinical Skills:
Chelsea is quick to respond in an emergency and always knows what to do for the patient. My best example is a time she was triaging L&D patients, and a patient who was trying to deliver outside the hospital came in with a ruptured uterus. She identified the problem quickly and had the patient in the C-section suite for a stat C-section so quickly. She gave that mother and baby their best chance at a positive outcome with her quick thinking and ability to identify a true emergency.
Compassionate Care:
She cared for the patient from the previous example with genuine concern and no bias, helping the mother to heal mentally from the trauma she experienced. She thoughtfully and gently cares for patients, helping birthing parents and families feel safe and well cared for.
Exemplary Service:
She heads the unit council and is on our bereavement committee for the L&D unit. She helped to organize our butterfly release for the community during the summer, as well as a candlelight bereavement event at the YMCA for the community. She stays current in her practice and up to date on all the policies and procedures on the unit through the unit council and helps implement the unit's Lean projects.
Continued Commitment:
Chelsea has been with the Salem Health L&D department for over a decade and has shown commitment through engaging in different councils as well as participating in community events. She is usually the first staff member to arrive on her shifts and doesn't call out sick. She is a preceptor on the unit and was, in fact, my preceptor, where I got to witness firsthand how much our patients and this unit mean to Chelsea. She is an exemplary nurse and truly shows the intelligence and heart that is the nursing profession.
