The last thing I remembered as I fought tears and things started going dark was Charnee's confident, kind voice. She told me we would be alright, that they were praying too, and that God had us.
At the end of my pregnancy, we were sent in to the hospital as a precaution to make sure everything was normal for me and the baby. We were reassured when everything checked out, but we decided to stay as it was so close to my due date anyway. I would be induced that evening and hopefully deliver sometime in the morning, we were told. Before the medicine could take effect, my water broke on its own, and labor came on fast. Charnee jumped into action to make me feel as comfortable as possible and called the various specialists in to do their thing. She kept a steady eye on me and my baby's vital signs. When it quickly became clear that something was wrong, she did not hesitate for one moment. She simultaneously gave me calm instructions and called for the doctor. When the doctor could not be located, she found several others to help immediately. Walking into an unknown situation, the doctors paused to catch up. Charnee recognized the need for urgency and made clear the immediate need for emergency surgery, insisting that it was not just a "positional" problem. She sparked the whole team into action and calmly explained our situation to me as we raced down the hall to the operating room. The epidural I received didn't work, my baby was in grave danger, and I was losing too much blood. Being a health care professional, I could tell that the situation was critical. The fear I felt in those minutes is indescribable. I prayed out loud as we entered the emergency room and the anesthesia mask came over my face. The last thing I remembered as I fought tears and things started going dark was Charnee's confident, kind voice. She told me we would be alright, that they were praying too, and that God had us. I woke up out of it and looking around frantically. There was Charnee, "your baby's okay, he's here with your husband". She placed my little boy on my chest before I could even get any words out. We found out later that my placenta had torn, placental abruption. If she had not jumped into action the way that she did when she did, the results could have been catastrophic. During the scariest night of my and my husband's lives, Charnee brought us hope. She was professional, efficient, and extremely caring. We are beyond grateful for her!!
