Charles Vagts showed extraordinary commitment and quick response during an emergency situation in the lobby of Building 90 at the Tucson VA. During a routine day, a patient in the lobby experienced a sudden and severe choking episode. Without hesitation, Charles Vagts immediately responded to the emergency. Demonstrating exceptional clinical skills and calm under pressure, he quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver on the choking patient, successfully dislodging the obstructing food item.

Charles Vagts did not stop there. He continued to monitor the patient's condition closely while waiting for EMS to arrive. His vigilance and dedication were further proven when the food item became lodged again. Once more, he performed the Heimlich maneuver, ensuring that the patient's airway remained clear. Due to his swift and effective reaction, thorough assessment, and decisive treatment, the patient was safely transported to the Emergency Department with no long-term effects from the choking episode.
