Nurse Celeste is one of the best outpatient nurses I have ever met, she is what people can call a nurse role model. Celeste is a joyful and caring nurse that we all in the department like to be around. Within the last year, she has brought us all in the department together by arranging activities outside of work when she feels things are getting a little tense or if we had a stressful busy week. However, what she does for her co-workers is not the only thing that makes her an Extraordinary Nurse.
I believe that for someone to be a remarkable nurse, they must also be kind and respectful with the people that they work and their patient families, and that is who Nurse Celeste is and does. Celeste is the type of nurse who does what is right even when people are not looking, and it shows because her patients are always talking about how amazing she is during their office visit during my rooming process. Celeste goes above, and beyond every day for all her patients, not just one time or one day, she gives her 110% every day while at work and treats every patient and their families with love and respect.
One of the 1st things that impressed me immediately about Nurse Celeste was the action she took during an in-patient teaching for a nephrotic syndrome patient. Celeste felt she needed to ask the in-patient nurse what was done for the patients when discharging from the hospital, and if they were providing the patient with urine-dipstick prior to going home. Since no urine-dipsticks were being provided for the patient, Nurse Celeste took action and called the social worker to see how they can supply the patient with a bottle. Because of her initiative, every nephrotic patient goes home with a urine-dipstick bottle, and patients can go home and test for their daily urine protein as instructed by their renal provider. Her action also allows the patient time to order their supply online and it also helps save the patient's family more than $50 (supply is not covered by patients' insurance). The reason why it stuns me what she did it is because I've been in the renal department for 2 years and no other nurse has done this for the patients before, and she had only been with this group a few weeks, and she made a positive change as soon as she saw an opportunity for improving patients' care. She's also done similar changes with the hypertension patients by making sure that the patients receive their blood pressure monitor at home.
Nurse Celeste has no free time at work; she is always working. She has a daily renal clinic, and when she is not in the clinic she is helping her patients get their treatment on time by doing medication with prior-authorizations, arranging biopsy orders, phone triaging, coordinating labs, ultrasound, and 24hour urine collection instructions for patients prior to their initial visit in Stone clinic or renal clinic. Celeste does so much every day for her patients that she deserves to be recognized for the fantastic work she does. Patients and their families love her and know her by her name, and some of the patients make thank you cards for her to show their appreciation for the care she provides. I am blessed to work with a fantastic nurse like Celeste. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
