At the end of Tara's shift, she drove, in the ice storm, to the patient's nursing home to see about bringing him his stuffies.
During the big ice storm in early 2025, a patient was brought into the CMRC ED for treatment. This patient has multiple diagnoses, including paraplegia, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. The patient was discharged from the ED hours after arrival; however, the ice storm prevented him from being taken back to his nursing home, as EMS crews were only running emergency transports. The patient became an overnight guest in the CRMC ED for approximately four days. Tara, who was never his primary nurse during the stay, heard a wail from his room and asked another nurse what was going on. The other nurse stated he has been wailing and crying because he didn't have his stuffies and he was missing them terribly. At the end of Tara's shift, she drove, in the ice storm, to the patient's nursing home to see about bringing him his stuffies. The nurses at the home were gracious, and they said his favorite stuffy was a lion from The Lion King. It was given to him by his grandmother, who had cared for him his whole life until she passed away, and he was placed in a care facility. Tara took the stuffies back to the ED and to the patient. She said the patient was sleeping when she brought them back in, but she tucked his stuffy in so he'd have it as soon as he woke up. The love, care, and compassion she has for all patients, especially those with special needs, are inspirational and drive me to become a better nurse. She is truly deserving of this DASIY Award
