Catie worked calmly to de-escalate the situation and work step by step with each staff member to ensure their mental well-being.
On the hardest day of many lives, Catie Thornton showed up in a meaningful way for staff, patients, and their families. While on shift, a patient passed away. The patient's family member was in shock, and the entire staff, including me, caring for the patient, were feeling hurt and vulnerable. Catie took the lead, taking the necessary steps to ensure the staff was physically and emotionally cared for. Catie had grace and poise when caring for family members who may have acted out of character that particular day. Catie considered the needs of others, including myself, that day, making a world of difference during a difficult time, all while being compassionate to bother family members and staff.
I have never wanted to quit on a shift in any job, but this was hands down the hardest day as a nurse, and Catie recognized that, taking action to care for her fellow caregivers. Catie was considerate of both family and nurse. Catie worked calmly to de-escalate the situation and work step by step with each staff member to ensure their mental well-being. Catie took time to write down the phone numbers for EAP and give them to me. Catie reassured me that I had given my best effort. Catie cared for the family, comforting them gracefully during such unspeakable times. I know that her words and effort provided peace to this family who was suffering a tremendous loss.
While these might have been small actions, they made a world of difference for me and truly gave me the courage to continue as a nurse after a heartbreaking experience. We need more nurses like Catie in this world to encourage, teach, and come alongside younger nurses during critical times in their careers. As a fellow nurse, I owe my deepest gratitude to Catie for showing up for me as a charge nurse, leader, and friend during a crucial moment in time. This is a moment I will never forget in my career, and while it stands out as one of the most challenging, I will always remember the way Catie took care of me.
