Beyond her clinical skills, Cathy treats every Veteran who walks through that door with the utmost respect and care, making us feel valued and heard.
During my visits to the Staunton VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), I have had the privilege of being cared for by Nurse Cathy Galvan in the lab, and she has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure that my experience is both positive and meaningful. One particular instance stands out that truly demonstrates the extraordinary level of care and compassion she provides.

As a Veteran, navigating healthcare can sometimes feel overwhelming, but Cathy has a way of making it easier. On one occasion, I was particularly anxious about my lab work due to past experiences with difficult blood draws and my general discomfort with medical procedures. Cathy immediately picked up on my anxiety, offering not just reassurance but also taking the time to explain every step of the process, ensuring I felt comfortable and in control. What sets her apart is her kindness and professionalism. Instead of rushing through the procedure, she engaged me in conversation, easing my tension with her warm demeanor and genuine care. She skillfully drew my blood with minimal discomfort, something I rarely experience, and made sure I was feeling well before I left. Her ability to combine technical expertise with heartfelt compassion made all the difference that day.

Beyond her clinical skills, Cathy treats every Veteran who walks through that door with the utmost respect and care, making us feel valued and heard. She is not just a nurse—she is a healer, a comforter, and a true advocate for Veterans’ well-being. Because of her dedication and unwavering kindness, I genuinely look forward to my visits rather than dreading them. Cathy Galvan embodies the very spirit of the DAISY Award.
