She is the nurse who reminds us why this profession is sacred.
It is with profound gratitude and the utmost respect that I nominate Cassie Stevens for the DAISY Award. Her extraordinary compassion, clinical excellence, and unwavering presence transformed one of the most frightening moments of my father’s life — and our family’s life — into an experience marked by dignity, comfort, and genuine human connection.

My father, an active man in his 80s and a proud military veteran, had never spent a night in a hospital. Just days before his hospitalization, he was in Florida with my husband and me — swimming, walking, working out, and enjoying life. When he returned home to Carmel, Indiana, he began experiencing sudden, unexplained falls. His initial labs were normal, and he was awaiting an outpatient MRI. But after another unexpected fall, he was taken to the ED. A CT scan at the community hospital revealed a mass, and he was transferred to St. Vincent for further evaluation.

The MRI showed two spots in his brain, and he is now scheduled for a biopsy. Our family was overwhelmed, frightened, and trying to process the unthinkable. And then Cassie walked into the room. From the moment she entered, the entire atmosphere shifted. Her warm smile, calm presence, and immediate confidence created a sense of safety that my father desperately needed. She made him feel emotionally secure before she even spoke a word. You could feel her expertise as she instinctively scanned the room for safety, assessed his needs, and demonstrated complete command of his plan of care. She ensured he understood every step, speaking with clarity, patience, and respect.

Cassie didn’t just care for my father — she cared for all of us. She welcomed our family with genuine kindness and made a personal connection that meant more than she could ever know. When she learned my father was a military veteran, she shared that her husband also serves. That moment of shared experience brought my father comfort, pride, and a sense of familiarity during a time of fear and uncertainty. It was a connection that grounded him. She went above and beyond in every interaction. She checked on him frequently, anticipated his needs, and made him feel comfortable with procedures and experiences that were entirely new to him. She treated him as if he were her only patient — a true VIP — and I know she provides this same level of care to every person she encounters.

Although she has been a nurse for only four years, Cassie embodies the confidence, skill, and compassionate presence that define the very best in our profession. Her care reflects not only clinical excellence but also the heart of nursing — the part that cannot be taught, only lived.

As a Chief Nursing Officer with more than 20 years of experience, I have seen and heard a great deal. But hearing Cassie's voice over the phone nearly brought me to tears. I could hear her love for her patients. I could feel her commitment. And in that moment, I knew my father — my rock — was in the best hands possible. She provided comfort not only to him, but to me as a daughter and as a nurse leader who understands the profound impact of exceptional caregiving.

Cassie embodies every attribute the DAISY Award represents. She is the nurse every family hopes will walk through their door. She is the nurse every leader wishes they could clone. She is the nurse who reminds us why this profession is sacred.

A Message in My Father’s Voice "My name is [PHI], and I want to share what Cassie meant to me. I am in my 80s, and I have lived a long, active life. I have never spent a night in a hospital, and I never imagined I would be facing something like this. When I heard there were spots on my brain, I was scared — more scared than I wanted to admit. But when Cassie walked into my room, something changed. She made me feel safe. She made me feel like I wasn’t alone. She talked to me with respect, explained things in a way I could understand, and treated me like a person — not a diagnosis.

When she told me her husband was in the military, it meant the world to me. It reminded me of who I am, what I’ve lived through, and the strength I still have. She connected with me in a way I will never forget. Cassie made me feel like I mattered. She made me feel like I was in good hands. And for that, I will always be grateful."

Cassie is a shining example of what the DAISY Award was created to honor. Her compassion, her presence, her clinical excellence, and her ability to connect on a deeply human level make her truly extraordinary. She changed our experience. She comforted our family. She cared for my father with a level of love and professionalism that will stay with us forever. It is with heartfelt appreciation and absolute conviction that I nominate Cassie Stevens, RN, for the DAISY Award.
