Through these combined actions, the patient was ultimately reunited with his family, bringing closure and healing after more than a year of separation and uncertainty.
I am honored to nominate Cassie Lewis, RN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care and unwavering advocacy for one of our most vulnerable patients. Cassie cared for a patient admitted as a “no name” letter packet with no known identity, medical history, or apparent support system. Rather than accepting the limitations of the situation, Cassie was deeply concerned about how this lack of information impacted the patient’s safety, dignity, and overall care. She recognized that understanding who this patient was could significantly improve the care we provided. Through patience, compassion, and genuine human connection, Cassie took the time to build trust with this individual. By sharing food and conversation, she created a sense of safety that allowed the patient to open up. Through these small but meaningful acts, she was able to learn his name, which became the key to uncovering a much larger and more critical story. Cassie went above and beyond by researching the information she obtained. During her search, she discovered that the patient matched a missing person report. He had been discharged from a behavioral health facility in California and provided with a Greyhound bus ticket to reunite with his family in Houston. Somewhere along the way, he became lost and never reached his destination. The patient had been missing for over a year. Recognizing the seriousness of this discovery, Cassie immediately alerted Parkland Police. Officers coordinated with law enforcement in El Paso to report the missing person. Despite limited information, Cassie refused to stop there. She escalated her concerns to management and strongly advocated that more needed to be done to support this patient and help reconnect him with his family. Because of Cassie’s persistence, Social Work was engaged, and a multidisciplinary effort followed. Through these combined actions, the patient was ultimately reunited with his family, bringing closure and healing after more than a year of separation and uncertainty. Cassie Lewis exemplifies the true spirit of nursing. She saw beyond a patient without a name and recognized a human being deserving dignity, compassion, and advocacy. Her determination and heart changed the course of this patient’s life and reunited a family who had been missing their loved one for far too long. Cassie’s actions go far beyond the expectations of her role and truly embody the values of nursing excellence honored by the DAISY Award.
