That thoughtful act meant so much to our family and showed the depth of her compassion.
I would like to recognize Carsen Hamann for her extraordinary compassion, dedication, and care during one of the most difficult times in our lives — the final days of my mother's life.

My mom was a patient at UnityPoint Hospital in Waterloo, and as we transitioned from a patient care room to a hospice suite in her final hours, Carsen was with us every step of the way. From the very first day we were admitted, she was proactive in my mom’s care — attentive, professional, and thorough, with an exceptional work ethic that never wavered, even under emotional pressure.

She immediately put our family at ease and made us feel supported in a situation that felt anything but. Carsen was with us for the first two days of what became a seven-day stay. During those two days, she helped us settle in, made sure every need — big and small — was met, and cared for my mom with such tenderness and skill that we knew we were in the best hands possible.

When my mom was moved to the hospice suite, Carsen went above and beyond: she waited at the nurses’ station so she could personally walk my dad down to the new room. That thoughtful act meant so much to our family and showed the depth of her compassion. Throughout her 12-hour shifts, she checked in on us regularly, making sure we felt cared for, informed, and never alone.

Even after those first two days, Carsen worked three other days during our stay. Although she wasn’t assigned to my mom on those shifts, she still made time to stop in and visit. My mom’s face would light up every time Carsen walked into the room. And despite not being her assigned nurse, Carsen would often jump in without hesitation to help care for my mom, simply because she cared. Her presence brought comfort and familiarity — not just for my mom, but for our entire family.

At the end of one of her shifts, Carsen stayed with us even after she had clocked out, sitting quietly with our family, offering comfort just by being there. It wasn’t part of her job — it was part of who she is. Carsen didn’t just provide excellent medical care — she gave us moments of peace, dignity, and humanity during one of the hardest weeks of our lives. She cared for my mom as if she were her own family, and she never stopped caring for the rest of us, either.

Her empathy, professionalism, and unwavering dedication left a lasting impression on our hearts, and we will be forever grateful for her. I can think of no one more deserving of recognition.
