September 2026 Honoree
Carrie Choi, BSN, RN
Carrie Choi is, quite honestly, one of the most amazing nurses I have ever met. As a nurse myself, I understand how difficult this profession can be. I know what it takes to walk from room to room, giving every patient grace, patience, compassion, and the best care possible. Carrie is the epitome of what a nurse should be.
My wife and I were expecting twin girls when, around 18 weeks, they were diagnosed with Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. We began a journey filled with frequent appointments and uncertainty until we ultimately underwent fetal laser surgery in hopes of saving both of our daughters. Tragically, we lost our sweet baby girl after the procedure and continued the pregnancy with her surviving twin. The months that followed were filled with grief, fear, and anxiety as we prepared to welcome one daughter while carrying the loss of another.
When my wife went into preterm labor at 33 weeks, we spent several days on the Labor and Delivery unit at McKay-Dee Hospital. Every nurse we encountered provided excellent care, but on the day our daughter was born, Carrie was truly an angel sent to our family. She recognized that we were experiencing two completely different emotions at the same time. We were devastated by the loss of one daughter while also wanting to celebrate the arrival of the other. Carrie never minimized either emotion. She created a space where we could grieve and rejoice at the same time. She went above and beyond to ensure my wife was comfortable and safe throughout labor, but she also cared for me. She checked on both of us, patiently sat with us through our tears, celebrated with us when our daughter arrived, and helped carry us through one of the most emotionally overwhelming days of our lives.
Although there wasn’t much that could be done for the twin who died, Carrie took the time to create precious keepsakes that we will cherish forever. She carefully made our daughter's footprints and gently wrapped her in blankets so we could hold our daughter, say goodbye, and begin to grieve. Those moments and those memories are gifts that our family will treasure for the rest of our lives.
Carrie embodies everything the nursing profession stands for. She combines exceptional clinical care with extraordinary compassion, empathy, and grace. Because of her, one of the hardest days of our lives is also filled with memories of kindness, dignity, and love. She will always hold a special place in my wife’s and my hearts. We will never forget the difference she made for our family.
