Carissa, thank you for being one of the few bright spots during an overwhelming and distressing time.
Carissa was my father’s nurse during his month-long stay, and, despite her busy schedule, she took the time to listen and be present with him and our family. She consistently asked not only if my father needed anything, but also if other family members or I needed support.
We were told my dad had hospital delirium, which was considered reversible, but it became increasingly clear to me that he was likely approaching the end of his life. Watching his rapid decline was devastating, especially as he stopped eating and sleeping, became irritable, and often incoherent. He wanted his medication early to try to sleep, even though sleep was elusive, so Carissa stayed late to ensure he received it during the shift change.
She maintained a positive, upbeat attitude, speaking to him with respect and kindness. I could tell my dad knew what was happening most of the time, even if he couldn’t speak or react normally, and it was remarkable how Carissa engaged with him as if he was fully present.
My dad’s time in the hospital was traumatic and difficult, but one of the few positive memories I have of this time is how kind and caring Carissa was.
Carissa, thank you for being one of the few bright spots during an overwhelming and distressing time. Thank you for caring about my dad and our family, for being present even with many patients to attend to, and for staying late to ensure he received his medication and comfort. Your attentiveness and compassion are truly exceptional. You are amazing.
