He told our staff he needed someone to give him facts without sugar-coating things and to be real with him in a caring way. He said that's exactly what Candice did.
One of our patients stated that Candice saved his life. He had a diabetic foot ulcer and needed IV antibiotics along with dressing changes. He was an inpatient and opted to leave our inpatient unit prior to the time the physician recommended due to issues going on at home. Candice worked with him, and he agreed to come back to the hospital for outpatient antibiotic therapy and dressing changes. He told our nursing staff that Candice noticed that his foot was not getting any better and talked to him about registering in the Emergency Department and being admitted on the floor again so he could get the care he needed. He said she was stern in a very caring way and did not sugar-coat the fact that he had a serious infection. He said he was talking to Candice about hiking and how pretty it was outside, etc. Candice said, "If you don't let us take care of your foot, hiking may become a distant memory." He said that really stuck with him, and when he left his outpatient appointment, he immediately went to the Emergency Department, where he ended up getting re-admitted and was later a swing bed patient. He told our staff he needed someone to give him facts without sugar-coating things and to be real with him in a caring way. He said that's exactly what Candice did, and he felt like it was because of her persistent ways that he didn't lose his foot or die from infection.
