Candice’s efforts not only helped the patient avoid another invasive procedure but also supported an already busy research team.
We recently cared for a patient who was both potentially eligible for a clinical trial and highly interested in pursuing this treatment option. As is often the case with oncology trials, submission of cancer tissue to the study sponsor is required for participation. Unfortunately, none of the patient’s previously collected biopsy tissue was available, as it had been sent to an out-of-state laboratory.

In situations like this, patients typically must undergo an additional biopsy to obtain sufficient tissue for submission. However, after learning that some of the original tissue had not been fully utilized by the outside lab, Candice took the initiative to expedite its return. This required multiple emails and phone calls over several days. Candice’s efforts not only helped the patient avoid another invasive procedure but also supported an already busy research team. Although this was not part of her formal responsibilities, she approached it with dedication and a positive attitude. Her commitment to putting patients first and supporting her colleagues truly reflects the heart of nursing.
