I would like to recognize Candace Jones for having provided extraordinary compassion and support to a family member during a recent high-stress situation. The family had just arrived at the bedside when their loved one began to decompensate. The patient’s blood pressure and heart rate quickly deteriorated. The family stepped aside while ICU staff stepped in to help. Their loved one began to code, and during that code event, ECMO cannulation was performed at the bedside. Candace went far beyond the expectations of her role. As we worked quickly to stabilize the patient, Candace remained with his wife and mom, who were understandably overwhelmed and frightened. While the chaos of the code and cannulation unfolded around them, many new and unfamiliar faces entered the room. Candace became a calm and steady presence. She sat with the family, holding their hands and offering comfort during moments that a loved one never wants to face. With incredible poise and clarity, she explained what was happening step by step, simplifying complex procedures in language that they could understand. Her words were not only informative, but deeply compassionate – offering reassurance without giving false hope and allowing the family to feel included rather than isolated. Candace instinctively knew what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. She validates their emotions, anticipates their needs, and provides a genuine human connection amidst the clinical urgency. Her ability to balance emotional support with clear communication exemplifies the very heart of nursing and what we strive to provide every day. I was in awe of her every time I passed by to grab supplies and equipment.

Candace’s presence in that moment brought peace to a family experiencing the unimaginable. Her actions reflect the highest standards of empathy, professionalism, and dedication to holistic patient and family care. She is a shining example of what the DAISY Award represents, and we are privileged to have her as part of our team.
