Cameron had continued to show my daughter amazing care throughout our nine-hour stay.
I would love to nominate this nurse for a DAISY Award in response to the exceptional bedside care my three-year-old daughter received at the USA Women's & Children's Hospital Pediatric ER on Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. We had previously visited the ER on Sunday for urine retention, and my daughter was put through a lot. I was feeling very defeated at having to return, but knew medically it was a necessity since she hadn't urinated in over 24 hours.

We were shown to a room rather quickly and immediately greeted by the nurse. Cameron recognized my daughter's heightened stress and fear when she saw him and didn't once push her. I think he also sensed how mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted I was, because he listened so intently to our story, asked questions, and just genuinely cared. He did examine my daughter, but also stated that he didn't want to do too much with her since she was clearly fearful, and the doctor would have to examine her thoroughly. I was so touched by his consideration for my baby.

The entire staff didn't want to cath her unless it was absolutely necessary, so giving her an enema was brought to us as an option to induce urination. We decided to proceed, and he literally hid behind a curtain while we got my daughter placed correctly so she didn't see him and would be more comfortable for the procedure. I do believe he intended it as a joke, but it gave my husband and me some much-needed laughter and also concealed the fact that he was still in the room while we were getting my daughter ready.

Another thing that really stood out to me about him was his humility. Cameron immediately asked about our visit on Sunday after showing us to our room and introducing himself, and I told him about her traumatic experience. At one point, I bluntly asked him how good he was at a cath if it came down to that. His response was so kind. He said he could do it, but there are others there that he knew were better and that he would absolutely pull someone in so it could go as quickly and painlessly as possible for my daughter if we had to go that route. His response spoke volumes to me and really developed trust. Cameron wasn't concerned with his ego or worried about what other people would think about him asking for help. He was genuinely putting my daughter's best interest first.

When he was going over discharge paperwork, he noticed they hadn't put any urologist information on there. I told him that the urologist was supposed to call us with a follow-up appointment. Cameron wrote the ER number on our paperwork and told me to call them if I hadn't heard from the urologist in 24 hours. I jokingly said I would and would ask for him. His response shocked me, because he immediately told me to ask for him, but then followed up that he was about to be off for a few days. He told me to still call, and someone there could follow up with the urologist about getting her an appointment. Again, he wasn't just trying to get us out of there. He truly wanted what was best for my daughter.

I don't know why I was surprised, though. Cameron had continued to show my daughter amazing care throughout our nine-hour stay. He was attentive, gentle, compassionate, and so respectful to my baby and her feelings in spite of her only being three years old.
