My wife and I are recommending our Labor and Delivery Nurse, Caitlin Keser, for the DAISY Award in appreciation of the extraordinary level of care we received from her during the birth of our second child.

My wife was admitted to the Labor and Delivery unit of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, and we met Nurse Keser in our room during the early stages of active labor. Nurse Keser was supportive and available throughout the whole process, answering all of our questions and ensuring that she was comfortable.

My wife shared details of her childbirth experience with our firstborn child. She had a horrible birth experience (at another hospital) involving hospital staff that ignored her pain, abandoned us for an hour and a half after 6 hours of pushing because she couldn’t progress, and an emergency cesarean section under general anesthesia requiring months of recovery. This experience shaped many of the anxieties that she felt regarding giving birth again.

My wife began active labor, and Nurse Keser worked with our doula to provide reassurance and encouragement to her. She progressed well until she started to feel pain in her hips and in the area of the scar from her first birth. Her pain became unbearable, and she was not able to continue pushing meaningfully to progress labor.

Nurse Keser advocated for her with our anesthesiologist about her level of pain, and the anesthesiologist, who had been working with a different patient in surgery, came to our room to provide her with additional pain management medication.

Shortly after this, Nurse Keser observed that my wife was bleeding and immediately called for her OB. The OB performed a rapid assessment and determined that an emergency cesarean was needed to protect the health of both my wife and our baby.

She was taken into the operating room, where she was prepped for surgery. Nurse Keser provided updates on the baby’s condition and reassurance to her and me throughout the surgery, which calmed us down and reminded us that we were not reliving the first birth experience.

When our baby was born, NICU staff determined that he had inhaled blood and performed interventions to help him breathe. He was discharged from the NICU after two days of CPAP support and has been eating, sleeping, and making cute baby noises ever since.

My wife and I are astounded at the level of care we received from Nurse Keser. Her upbeat demeanor, her willingness to answer questions and provide comfort are beyond anything that we expected. Her ability to advocate for my wife's comfort resulted in her receiving prompt pain management medication when she needed it.

Most importantly, Nurse Keser's immediate recognition of her placental abruption resulted in a positive outcome for my wife and our baby when delayed treatment would have meant disaster.

Throughout our experience with her, Nurse Keser demonstrated empathy, professionalism, and a high degree of medical proficiency. Nurse Keser exemplifies excellence in nursing and reflects great credit on herself, her hospital and the nursing profession.

Thank you, Caitlin, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
