During my 19-year-old daughter’s recent hospital stay, we were told that because she was in a shared room, she could not have a support person stay with her. This was incredibly upsetting for her—she felt scared, unsafe, and alone due to the condition of her roommate. On the second day, Cailey stepped in like an angel. She not only advocated for my daughter to be moved to a private room, but also informed us of our rights—specifically that patients are allowed a support person, even in shared rooms, as stated clearly on the hospital’s website. Thanks to Cailey’s advocacy, my daughter’s father was able to stay with her overnight, and I’m finally able to rest peacefully knowing she’s not alone. Cailey went above and beyond to make sure my daughter was comfortable, safe, and emotionally supported. She encouraged her to speak up for herself, to ask questions, and to trust her instincts if something didn’t feel right. That level of empowerment made all the difference in her experience. Cailey not only changed the physical environment for my daughter but also helped remove her from an emotionally difficult situation where her roommate had been unkind and disruptive. Her actions reflect everything the DAISY Award stands for—compassion, advocacy, and excellence in nursing care.
