The patient had only one wish for her birthday, which happened to be the day Brooke was her nurse. This wish was to go outside.
I currently work as a unit based nursing educator and have known Brooke Shea RN for about one and half years. She had just under two years of nursing experience when she started at BILH in July of 2021. Brooke is an excellent nurse with an empathetic bedside manner. Her quiet and calm demeanor puts patients at ease. She often assists in orienting new nurses. Earlier this year she took care of a patient with end-stage pancreatic cancer. This patient had already been in the hospital for a month and was now receiving care in the form of comfort measures only. The patient had only one wish for her birthday, which happened to be the day Brooke was her nurse. This wish was to go outside. Through the efforts of her physician, nursing supervisor, and Brooke, the patient was able to go outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Brooke certainly went above and beyond for this patient and family, especially on a weekend shift when few support resources are available.

Taken from a letter from the family: "This meant the world to our family. It is a memory we will hold on to forever. Your staff had no obligation to make this happen, and certainly does not constitute medical care, but it was the type of medicine that soothes the soul. We will forever be grateful to Dr. Hale, Brooke RN, and the Nurse Supervisor for making that happen."

Brooke is a nurse who truly puts into practice the BILH mission, especially caring compassionately for patients while advocating for them and their families.
