Even when there were no words that could ease their pain, she offered quiet compassion and strength.
We would like to nominate Brooke for the DAISY award for the incredible compassion she showed. Brooke was carrying the weight of the recent loss of her own loved one when arriving for her shift.

Only a few hours into the shift, a new mother and father that she was caring for had to make the heartbreaking decision to withdraw care on their newborn baby. Brooke spoke softly to the parents, handled each detail with gentleness, and remained steady through their grief. Even when there were no words that could ease their pain, she offered quiet compassion and strength. It was clear that these parents trusted Brooke and found comfort in her presence when they asked her to join them at their baby’s bedside as he took his last breaths.

Brooke advocated for her patient by coordinating a multidisciplinary team huddle to ensure the mother’s safety and well-being. As the medical team tried to meet with the mother to assess her mental well-being after the passing of her newborn, the mother requested Brooke’s presence during the discussion.

As a fellow nurse, watching Brooke reminded us of the true heart of nursing, that it’s not only about skill and knowledge but about showing love and humanity in the hardest moments.

This family will forever remember the kindness and care shown to them during their darkest time. We are so fortunate to have Brooke as a part of our team. She truly embodies the healing power of compassionate nursing.
