God sent an angel to care for my father-in-law before sending an angel to take him home.
Brittany's unparalleled care of my father-in-law during his last days was astonishing. I witnessed Brittany's actions begin as soon as she opened the door by using her sterling skills to assess his behaviors and body language changes since her previous shift. She walked in and greeted him first and foremost. After her introduction to us, I watched an affectionate woman serve as a devoted nurse, attentive to the needs of a dying man.
At one point during the day, she was doting on him while administering medications and monitoring his vitals. I watched his eyes gleam with assurance of knowing he was the only thing on her mind at that moment, and his care was her best. Another time, I caught her eyes slightly tearing as he begged for something to eat, which she could not provide. She stifled her words as she awaited the doctor's orders, but later was able to bring him oatmeal. I watched a heartfelt bonding continue as she fed him. She was so compassionate in administering medications, even when he said, "I did not want any more".
I watched him fall into a sleep that afternoon and never wake up. She continued to provide unwavering care for him until his transfer to Hospice that evening. He could not remain in her care until her shift ended, but she insisted on assisting with his transport to Hospice Care on the 2nd floor. She stayed in his room until the hospice nurse introduced herself to us. We were about to ask if we could hug her before she left, but she asked first. We hugged her and gratefully thanked her so much for her heartfelt care for him!
My prayer for my father-in-law was God's will to be done, but while on earth, entrust his health in the heart of a passionate, caring person. My father-in-law passed away the next day in peace, and I know Brittany's role was divinely instrumental in it. God sent an angel to care for my father-in-law before sending an angel to take him home. Brittany Humphrey is an exemplary recipient of the DAISY Award for her love, compassion, and dedication to her patients and their families!
Thank you, Brittany!
