Brenda is new to the position within the last year. In that time, she has brought her knowledge and skill to the position. The focus of her working with the staff shows respect and kindness in all her actions. Daily Brenda rounds and asks if anyone needs anything to start their day. She does this with kindness in her voice and a smile on her face. If something is needed, she will personally obtain it. I have also witnessed her helping a staff member if they were having a bad day.
Weekly chats in our lounge are times for communication from staff to Brenda and Brenda to staff. She begins each chat with, "How is your day?" Open discussion is encouraged and fostered. Calm and kindness to relay any critical and important information to the staff is the way Brenda talks. Many times, issues arise in the department, and time is always made to discuss and help the staff. Our patients are always our number one priority. Staffing can be challenging but the patients are the focus.
Brenda has worked to help when days are light for cases and people are given days off to help with the budget. Before a decision was made how to handle this, Brenda said she would survey the staff and get input from them to see how they wanted to be notified in the mornings so incase call-offs occurred our staffing would always be based on patient need.
Many positions have been difficult to fill, such as weekend charge nurse, and evening desk clerks. Brenda has taken this to heart and worked diligently to staff these positions. When equipment has not worked or is broken, she will continue to forge ahead to rectify the problem. She is firm, but kind, showing fairness and kindness to all. I do believe Brenda is the Gold Standard for a leader and I feel all benefit from her within the department.
