It's strange the connection that can be felt with someone who, otherwise, is a stranger, but helped you through the hardest, most painful day.
I came to the Labor and Delivery unit six hours prior to my scheduled induction due to intense labor contractions. My nurse, Bonnie, was quick to listen to me and respond with compassion. At no one's fault, but fate, my birth plan was out the window. I wanted a pain-free, medicated birth with an epidural, like I had with my firstborn. This baby had other plans.

I was progressing too quickly for any pain intervention. This was my worst-case scenario, and I was absolutely terrified. At one point, I was even hoping I would pass out, or they would put me under and do a C-section. I honestly didn't think I would make it through the pain without my husband and Bonnie cheering me on. She coached me by helping me breathe effectively, and showed my husband pressure points on my back for him to rub. She spoke words of affirmation the whole way through.

It went fast and hectic, but when I remember back to the event, the face and voice I see belong to Bonnie. After the birth, she took great care of me and my daughter. She explained every detail and answered a dozen of my questions.  It's strange the connection that can be felt with someone who, otherwise, is a stranger, but helped you through the hardest, most painful day. Any patient who is lucky enough to endure labor during her shift is in capable, caring hands.

Thank you, Nurse Bonnie!
