Even with the increase in violence and acuity their compassion for our patients shines.
Behavioral health nursing is the epitome of team nursing. It’s not only one RN or CNA on Swedish Edmonds Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) that makes a difference, but also the whole team. The past year and a half of the pandemic has wreaked havoc on everyone’s mental health, and it has been especially hard for those with mental illness. Our patients are sicker than they have been before and with that we have seen an increase in violence. Violence towards our patients prior to admission and violence and abuse to us while we are caring for them on our BHU. The 9W nursing staff face physical and verbal abuse and threats nearly every day they work and sometimes multiple times per day, but they continue to come to work and provide compassionate care to our patients. They do their best not to take it personally and see behind the anger and ask, “why do they act this way, what has happened to them to cause this?” Even with the increase in violence and acuity their compassion for our patients shines. I see their compassion in how they will take time to play a card game with someone who may have said horrible things to them the day prior. They will bring in specialty food in sealed packages for someone with paranoia who won’t eat or drink hospital food. I see it in how they bring in Halloween candy or enough Christmas presents for the entire unit in knowing that the patients will be confined to the unit with no family during the holidays. They advocate, problem-solve, and do care planning to find solutions and least restrictive options to keep our patients safe every day, they deserve all the recognition Swedish has to offer.
