That may not seem like a big deal, but for a patient who is used to being looked away from, it’s a huge deal!
Becca was my mom’s nurse after her procedure. She was incredibly friendly, joked with my mom, and took excellent care of her. What stood out the most was that my mom has a tracheostomy and has no voice. Most people, hospital staff included, get nervous about this and look to family to “translate” what my mom is mouthing. Not Becca, though. She shared that she has previous experience with trach patients, and it showed! She held full-on conversations with my mom, one-on-one, including joking around with her. She did not let my mom’s lack of voice intimidate her or make her nervous. Rather, she treated her like she was any other patient with full speech. That may not seem like a big deal, but for a patient who is used to being looked away from, it’s a huge deal! So thank you, Becca, for being an all-star. My mom has gone through much trauma through the course of COVID and beyond, and it’s nurses like you who make things less scary and less scarring. I would also like to give a shout-out to the other nurses on the unit as well. They were so caring and compassionate and definitely left a positive impression as well. Thank you all for such a positive experience. Your efforts and bedside manner did not go unnoticed!
