The nurse I would like to nominate for the DAISY Award is Barb Reed. Her general everyday character is one of positivity, helpfulness, and teamwork. She is always a joy to work with. One night I went into a patient's room with her, the patient had a diagnosis of cancer and he was not doing well. Not physically well or mentally well. He called from the bathroom, but it was already too late before he even got in there. He soiled himself, including his clothes. He was extremely upset about this. He was lashing out in anger at us. He was beside himself, and at face value, he seemed so angry. Barb spoke to him in such a gentle, caring, and reassuring tone. She told him it was ok, speaking softly, she was there to help him. She got down on her hands and knees and cleaned him up, all while reassuring this angry-looking man. She discovered he was upset about his clothes being soiled, as he didn't have many other clothing items with him. She promised him she would launder his clothes and have them back to him before her shift ended. And she did just that! She handled him with such compassion. She turned a blind eye to all that displaced anger and saw it for what it was- a wounded person who was hurting deeply who needed to be treated with respect, kindness, compassion, and grace.
