My dad was admitted to the hospital for a UTI and its resulting infection. My dad presented with a lot of pain due to a severe infection and a long-ago injury to his neck, for which he regularly takes opioids. He had a series of nurses who were very competent, and for three days in a row, Barb was his day nurse. She took good care throughout the time she interacted with him to ask him how he was, treat his pain when he needed it, and do what she could to make him comfortable. She was patient and calm, even when my dad was moaning and crying out in pain, having bowel movements she had to clean up after, and expressing clear confusion about the situation. She spent time with him discussing his dog, listening to how he broke his neck when he was 17, and finding areas of connection with him. She was never dismissive or seemed to be in too much of a hurry, even though I know that she was very busy. When his pain was intolerable, Barb contacted the doctor right away to adjust his medication and was a real advocate for him (and us). Barb's sense of humor was so welcome, and my dad really liked her, saying that she was a "keeper." I saw her as a partner in my dad's care and know that his improvement is due in large part to her efforts. She even stayed a bit after her shifts to check in with him and connect with us. I consider her to be an extraordinary nurse who clearly puts her patients first, and I am so happy to have the opportunity to nominate her for the DAISY Award. Thank you so much, Barb.
