Bailey Jones, BSN, RN, has been a passionate, engaged nurse and a true team player from the moment she stepped onto 3 Tower. She consistently brings a warm smile and deep compassion to each shift worked, always placing the care of her patients above the needs of her own. Recognizing the need for additional support for nurses caring for dying patients, Bailey took the initiative to create the “Comfort Care Box.” This served as a resource with educational references for both patients and family to prepare for the end-of-life transition, as well as included legacy building materials.
Bailey has dedicated countless hours, both during and outside her shifts, to help nurses become more confident and comfortable using these materials and caring for comfort care patients. She’s also spent significant time working with family members and patients of her own and of the other nurses to make memorabilia for the patients, such as framed thumbprint pictures, thumbprint bookmarks, bottled telemetry strips, and legacy books.
One of Bailey’s patients, unfortunately, a younger individual with a cancer diagnosis, spent much time on 3 Tower in his last few weeks of life. He was able to form close connections with many of the staff on the unit as well. In the last few days of his life, Bailey went above and beyond, taking time on her day off to come to the unit and help this patient with his transition to comfort care. Bailey and the patient created numerous thumbprint bookmarks and pictures with his signature, which she framed for his family and friends, and even for the nursing staff who had grown close to this patient during his time on the unit. She also organized a heartfelt gesture in which she had the staff working that day sign a quilted blanket for the patient and his family. Throughout the day, Bailey also spent time sitting and talking with the patient and his family that day to help him navigate through fears and uncertainties about choosing comfort-only measures.
Bailey consistently puts her patients first, even when she is not scheduled to work. She is a selfless caregiver, compassionate, and an extraordinary patient advocate. She exhibits commitment to both her patients and colleagues, going far beyond the expectations of her role. Actions like these speak volumes about Bailey’s character, thus supporting why she fulfils the title of a DAISY nurse.
