Her actions not only ensured the safety and well-being of the patient, staff, and community but also exemplified the leadership and commitment we value so highly here.
In early November, this RN’s quick thinking and dedication were put to the test when a patient arrived to our ER with symptoms suggesting a possible highly infectious disease after traveling to Uganda. Without hesitation, Audra took charge, ensuring the safety of both the patient and others in the ER. She carefully assisted in removing the critically ill patient from the car and quickly placed them in a room, all while ensuring that the other guests in the lobby remained protected. Audra didn’t stop there—she took it upon herself to perform the necessary blood work and swabs, minimizing exposure to her team and preventing the need for a full ER decontamination.
Her ability to communicate clearly with her team, infectious disease specialists, and the attending physician was key in managing this challenging situation. And when the patient required emergency surgery, this RN’s leadership continued to shine. She updated the OR, inpatient floor, and Charge Nurse, kept the family informed with direct phone calls, and seamlessly managed the flow of our busy ER.
Afterward, this RN didn’t rest. She immediately debriefed with the Assistant Director, Infection Prevention, Emergency Preparedness, and her team to analyze the incident and discuss process improvements.
Her actions not only ensured the safety and well-being of the patient, staff, and community but also exemplified the leadership and commitment we value so highly here. For all of this, we are so proud to present Audra McHenry with the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Please join me in congratulating her!
