She treated this family not just as patients, but as people deserving of dignity, clarity, and support—ensuring they were truly set up for success beyond their hospital stay.
Aubreyanna provided exceptional care to a 6-day-old infant and their family during their stay on our unit. The baby's parents spoke only Kinyarwanda and were not able to understand English, presenting a significant communication barrier. Aubreyanna went above and beyond to ensure this family felt supported, informed, and safe throughout their hospital experience and discharge process.

She took the initiative to schedule all necessary follow-up appointments for the baby and clearly documented the addresses, dates, and times to ensure the family had accurate information. Understanding the importance of clear communication, Aubreyanna used the teach-back method during discharge education, confirming the parents truly understood the information being shared with them.

When the family had questions about applying for their baby's birth certificate—a process that involved navigating an English-only website—Aubreyanna patiently worked with an interpreter for over 30 minutes to help them complete the required forms and ensure they would receive the birth certificate without delay.

The next day, Aubreyanna noticed the mother had forgotten her stored breast milk in the unit’s refrigerator. Rather than simply discarding it, Aubreyanna made multiple attempts to contact the family through an interpreter to let them know it was available for pickup. During this conversation, she also learned that the baby had missed their pediatrician appointment due to a construction-related change of address for the clinic.

Aubreyanna promptly rescheduled the appointment and ensured the family received the correct location. She also arranged for the breast milk to be returned to them.

Aubreyanna demonstrated extraordinary compassion, dedication, and advocacy. Her actions exemplify the highest standards of nursing care. She treated this family not just as patients, but as people deserving of dignity, clarity, and support—ensuring they were truly set up for success beyond their hospital stay.
