Knowing she was there gave me a sense of comfort and strength that I can’t fully put into words.
Midland, Texas – Ashlie Labarda, Clinical RN III in Labor & Delivery at Midland Health, was recently honored with The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of The DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate care nurses provide to patients and families every day.
Labarda was named Midland Health’s May DAISY Award winner for the extraordinary care she provided to a mother and her family during the birth of twins.
Labarda was nominated by Megan Davidson, PCU Clinical Manager and new mother of twins, who described her as a nurse who went far beyond her assigned duties to make sure Davidson felt supported, informed, and cared for throughout the labor and delivery process.
“I would like to nominate Ashlie for the DAISY because she truly embodies what it means to be an extraordinary nurse,” Davidson wrote.
Throughout the delivery, Labarda walked Davidson through each step with patience and compassion. No matter how many questions came up or how overwhelming the moment became, Davidson said Labarda never made her feel rushed or insignificant.
What stood out most was Labarda’s willingness to stay by Davidson’s side even after her day shift should have ended. Labarda was on call for the night shift and needed to work that evening, but instead of showing frustration, Davidson said Labarda expressed excitement about staying through the entire delivery.
“Because of her commitment, she was able to witness the birth of our twins, and that meant everything to us,” Davidson wrote. “Knowing she was there gave me a sense of comfort and strength that I can’t fully put into words.”
In one of the most vulnerable moments of labor, Davidson said Labarda gave her the confidence she needed to keep going. She held her hand, offered reassurance, and remained steady, calm, and empowering when Davidson felt she could not push anymore.
Labarda’s care also extended beyond her patient. Davidson said Labarda supported her husband, answered his questions, and made sure he felt included and confident throughout the process.
“She treated us not just as patients, but as people experiencing one of the most important days of our lives,” Davidson wrote.
By the end of the experience, Labarda had made such a lasting impact that Davidson cried when her shift ended.
“She made our birth experience one filled with confidence, love and support instead of fear,” Davidson wrote. “Ashlie truly exemplifies compassionate, patient-centered nursing.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, an autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this meaningful way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.
The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors nurses for extraordinary, compassionate care. At Midland Health, the award celebrates nurses whose skill, kindness, and dedication leave a lasting impact on patients, families, and colleagues.
Congratulations to Ashlie Labarda on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for the difference you make for patients and families in Labor & Delivery.
